But Nitrogen is a flame retardant, so I'm sure that plays into it - protecting the internals from excessive heat when the molecule splits and the oxygen combusts. Pure oxygen is generally considered to be dangerous - it wouldn't surprise me if injecting pure oxygen would blow the heads off the car. I'm sure if there were a safer (or even as safe) compound that one could carry in a car that's subjected to temperature changes (like sitting in direct sunlight) that would yield similar or greater power output, someone would've thought of it... since the application of nitrous to motor vehicles after WWII, there have been lots of very intelligent people trying to figure out how to make horsepower.
